Bibliography: Picasso and the Spanish Tradition

"Jonathan Brown, Picasso y la tradición española"
Jonathan Brown, Picasso y la tradición española

Picasso's interpretation of Spain and Spanish art evolved throughout his life. However, one thing that remained constant, from his earliest days to the end, was the inspiration of Spanish masters such as El Greco, Velázquez and Goya and their impact on his work.

This book is the first to offer a thorough analysis of Picasso's link with the Spanish artistic and cultural tradition. The inspiration that Picasso drew from the artists who preceded him in the great Spanish tradition is well known, but until now there has been no specific work that has analysed in detail the commitment that the Malaga-born artist always showed to these great figures and their artistic heritage.

The writer Jonathan Brown (1939-2022) was an American historian and Hispanist whose career focused on the study of Spanish painting, with special attention to the work of Velázquez. He also devoted much of his career to 16th- and 17th-century Latin American art, as well as to the history of collecting.

The programme of Celebration Picasso 1973-2023 makes room for these influences on Picasso's work in three different exhibitions. Picasso, El Greco and Analytical Cubism at the Museo Nacional del Prado, Goya in Picasso's Gaze at the Musée Goya. Musée d'art hispanique de Castres (France) and Diego Velázquez invites Pablo Picasso at Casa de Velázquez.
