Museo Reina Sofía
01.12.2022 - 02.12.2023
On 1 and 2 December, the Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid is holding an international conference entitled Picasso from the perspective of cultural studies. Dream and Lie of Spain (1898-1922), which is part of the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the artist's death on 8 April 1973.
Leading experts in various fields will present their research from original approaches. Through the 14 lectures, 4 round tables and the screening of a documentary, the historical circumstances experienced by the Malaga-born artist between 1898 and 1922 will be introduced in order to decipher some of the coordinates that determined the new style that defined the avant-garde Picasso.
Thus, for example, Servando Rocha, Conxa Rodríguez and Josep Casals will deal with Picasso's stay in the bohemian environments of Madrid, Barcelona and Paris; Dolors Marín and Chris Ealham will analyse his contact with the ideology of the anarchist proletariat in Barcelona; and Eloy Martín will give a lecture on the colonial context in which Picasso lived, marked by the processes of independence in Cuba and the Philippines and the war with Africa.
The Congress is supported by the National Commission for the Commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the death of Pablo Picasso as part of the official programme of the Picasso Celebration 1973-2023 which, through fifty exhibitions and events, will pay tribute to Picasso between 2022 and throughout 2023 in the venues of renowned cultural institutions in Europe and the United States.
