The exhibition "Celebration Picasso. The collection takes colour!" curated by Cécile Debray and Joanne Snrech, under the artistic direction of Paul Smith, will be open to the public from 7 March to 27 August.
The Musée national Picasso-Paris, the main lender and coordinator of Picasso Celebration 1973-2023, will invite visitors to rediscover Picasso's oeuvre with a selection of masterpieces from its collection, which Sir Paul Smith has given a visual context through a spectacular and highly creative presentation of the works.
Works by international contemporary artists have been incorporated into the tour with the aim of opening up new interpretations of Picasso's oeuvre. The work of Guillermo Kuitca, Obi Okigbo, Mickalene Thomas and Chéri Samba contribute their own interpretation of the Malaga-born artist's artistic innovations.
Cécile Debray was appointed president of the Musée national Picasso-Paris in November 2021. A curator by training, she was previously director of the Musée de l'Orangerie (2017-2021). Joanne Snrech is curator of heritage. She has previously been responsible for the modern and contemporary collections at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rouen (2017-2020). And Sir Paul Smith is one of Britain's great designers, renowned for his creative spirit, combining tradition and modernity.
The exhibition is part of the Picasso Celebration 1973-2023 programme, with more than fifty exhibitions and events, which will commemorate the 50th anniversary of Pablo Picasso's death throughout 2023 in renowned cultural institutions in Europe and the United States.
