The Hispanic Society of America in New York exhibits Picasso's works inspired by Spanish literary masters

The Hispanic Society of America in New York inaugurates Picasso and the Spanish Classics, the last of seven exhibitions scheduled in the United States as part of the Picasso Celebration 1973-2023, an initiative promoted by the governments of Spain and France that pays tribute to the Malaga-born artist on the 50th anniversary of his death.

Curated by Dr. Patrick Lenaghan, curator of the Hispanic Society, the exhibition focuses on Picasso's interest in Spanish literature, particularly Luis de Góngora and Miguel de Cervantes, two literary giants of the 17th century. It will remain open to the public from November 2 to February 4, 2024.

The exhibition Picasso and the Spanish classics deals with Picasso's reading of the Spanish literary masters, the vision of women and Cervantes' Don Quixote or even his interpretation of Velázquez's The Portrait of Luis de Góngora (1622).

The exhibition includes works of art rarely exhibited to the public, along with editions and manuscripts from the 17th century, including the recent acquisition of Picasso's suite of engravings on poems by Góngora, Vingt poëmes (1948).
