The Minister of Industry, Trade and Tourism, Reyes Maroto, and the Minister of Culture and Sports, Miquel Iceta, presented today, January 18, 2023, at FITUR the ambitious program that makes up the Picasso Celebration 1973-2023, a tribute to the Malaga-born artist on the 50th anniversary of his death, which will be extended through 50 exhibitions and events in all corners of the world.
Maroto and Iceta have vindicated the legacy of Picasso and the importance of his work in a round table, moderated by Carlos Alberdi, commissioner for the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the death of Pablo Picasso. The event took place in the auditorium of the Turespaña stand at FITUR, the leading tourism fair in Ibero-America organized by Ifema.
The event was also attended by directors of museums participating in the official program and a representative of Turespaña, and highlighted the figure of Picasso, a symbol of creativity and a builder of the modern look, who projected internationally such universal symbols as Guernica, a collective emblem in the defense of human rights.
But it has also served to highlight that this is the first tribute to Picasso that Spain has organized in international collaboration: the governments of Spain and France have joined together in a bi-national commission to develop this program of international scope, which reflects the validity of the artist's work, delving into unpublished aspects of his oeuvre.
50 exhibitions and events to celebrate Picasso
Fifty exhibitions, congresses, events and other initiatives will celebrate Picasso's artistic legacy in Europe and the United States until 2024.
Thus, in Spain the public will be able to follow a route through Picasso's life and work, from the Malaga of his birth, to the A Coruña of his childhood and the Barcelona of his training, along with his time at the Academy and National Commission for the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Pablo Picasso's death, especially the Prado Museum in Madrid; destinations that will be joined by others such as Bilbao with a major sculpture exhibition.
The Picasso Celebration 1973-2023 program started last September and, since then, almost 200,000 people have been able to visit the temporary exhibitions that have already opened at the Mapfre Foundation, the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum and the Museu Picasso Barcelona.
Internationally, since September, exhibitions have also opened to the public in France, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland and the United States. You can consult the complete calendar of exhibitions here.
