The works in the exhibition Picasso: Untitled are activated in the room by six performers who follow a series of instructions that the artist and choreographer Maria Hassabi has created for the exhibition.
The performances take place in the four exhibition rooms in real time for visitors to the exhibition on 20 and 21 May.
The piece is part of Picasso: Untitled / Con, the public programme that accompanies the exhibition, inviting different artists to work with the texts generated for the exhibition and translate them into other languages through music, performance or orality. Maria Hassabi is one of the 50 contemporary artists who have participated in the exhibition, retitling one of Picasso's works.
Maria Hassabi is an artist and choreographer who works with live performance, installation, sculpture, photography and video. Since the early 2000s, she has developed a distinct artistic practice based on the relationship of the live body to the still image and the sculptural object. His works reflect on concepts of time and the human figure, while employing a variety of media to emphasise the complexity of formal organisation. They have been presented at LUMA, Arles; OGR, Turin; Secession, Vienna; Centre Pompidou, Paris; K20, Düsseldorf; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; MoMA, NY; Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Melbourne; The Kitchen, NY; documenta14, Kassel; Performa, NY; 55th Venice Biennale, among others. Hassabi has received the Malcolm Mclaren Award from Performa 2019; the New York Dance and Performance "Bessie" Award in 2016; the Herb Alpert Award in 2015; the LMCC President's Award for the Performing Arts in 2012; the Guggenheim Fellowship in 2011 and the Artist Grant Award from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts in 2009. She holds a BFA from the California Institute of the Arts.
