The Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET) in New York inaugurates Picasso: A Cubist Commission in Brooklyn, the penultimate of seven exhibitions scheduled in the United States as part of the Picasso Celebration 1973-2023, an initiative promoted by the Spanish and French governments that pays tribute to the Malaga-born artist on the 50th anniversary of his death.

The exhibition presents a series of works related to the decoration commissioned to Picasso in 1910 for the Brooklyn residence of the artist, critic and collector Hamilton Easter Field, and can be visited from September 14 to January 14, 2024.

The exhibition-curated by Anna Jozefacka and Lauren Rosati of the Department of Modern and Contemporary Art and the Leonard A. Lauder Research Center for Modern Art at The MET-will bring together for the first time the six paintings linked to this commission, along with related works and archival material.

The decoration of this long, narrow library was Picasso's first opportunity to apply the Cubist language to large-scale decorative formats that, unfortunately, was never completed due to Field's death in 1922. An almost unknown project of which no sketches were known until the discovery of a letter from Field to Picasso in 1910, which made it possible to re-evaluate some of Picasso's cubist paintings of unusual dimensions and relate them to this project.

Picasso: A Cubist Commission in Brooklyn presents recent research on Field and Picasso beyond traditional historical accounts of this commission, examining the challenge of creating the large-scale decorative ensemble.

Among the materials on view are Nude Woman (1910) from the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and the enigmatic Woman Reclining on the Couch (1910) on loan from a private collection, as well as the commission letter, the primary textual evidence of the project, and drawings and plans to illustrate the library.

The exhibition is part of the Picasso Celebration 1973-2023 program, with more than fifty exhibitions and events, which will commemorate the 50th anniversary of Pablo Picasso's death throughout 2023 at renowned cultural institutions in Europe and the United States.

The United States pays tribute to Picasso with seven exhibitions as part of the Picasso Celebration 1973-2023 initiative: Cubism and the Trompe-l'oeil Tradition, on view at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, October-January; Picasso's Landscapes: Out of Bounds, on view at The Mint Museum, February-May, and now at the Cincinnati Art Museum, June-October; The Young Picasso in Paris (Solomon R.
