The Von der Heydt Museum in Wuppertal and the Sprengel Museum in Hannover present the exhibition Pablo Picasso | Max Beckmann, which will be open to the public from September 17 to January 7.

This exhibition offers the opportunity to contrast the work of two key figures of the avant-garde, Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) and Max Beckmann (1884-1950), whose contributions redefined figurative painting in the first half of the 20th century.

This collaboration brings together approximately 200 works, including paintings, graphics and sculptures, and is enriched by loans from renowned institutions such as the Centre Pompidou, the Musée national Picasso Paris, the Kunstmuseum Basel and the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen in Munich, as well as prestigious private collections.

The proposal of Pablo Picasso | Max Beckmann is to present a conversation between the works of both artists, revealing the motivations that drove them as artists, as well as their different responses to the great challenges of their time. Both artists explored the complex relationship between the human being and the world around them and dealt intensely with the dynamics between men and women. They also drew on the power of myth to give depth and weight to their creations, leaving a legacy of symbols that endure to this day and reflect the ruptures and crises of the twentieth century.

The exhibition is part of the Picasso Celebration 1973-2023 program, which commemorates, with more than fifty exhibitions and events, the 50th anniversary of Pablo Picasso's death in renowned cultural institutions in Europe and the United States.

Germany pays tribute to Picasso with two exhibitions as part of this Picasso Celebration 1973-2023 initiative: the first was Fernande and Françoise, and was on view at the Kunstmuseum Pablo Picasso Münster between October and January, while Pablo Picasso | Max Beckmann will be the second one organized in Germany and will remain open from September to January 2024.
