The influence on Picasso's work of his trip to Italy in 1917 and his fascination for the excavations of Pompeii are reflected in the exhibition Picasso and the Ancient World, on view from April 5 to August 27 at the National Archaeological Museum of Naples, as part of the Picasso Celebration 1973-2023, a program promoted by the Spanish and French governments to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the death of the Malaga-born artist.
The exhibition includes works on loan from institutions such as the British Museum and the Musée national Picasso Paris, and focuses on the influence that his life in Italy had on Picasso's work.
The public can learn in depth how these visits to the city that was buried in ashes in 79 after the eruption of Vesuvius, but also to Rome and Florence, had a clear impact on the artistic evolution of Picasso and led to the emergence of naturalism in his work.
In addition, the exhibition also highlights how classical forms return to Picasso's work, a trend that had already been seen in the years prior to 1917 and that is once again very present in numerous non-Cubist paintings and drawings from 1917 to 1925 and in part of the graphic work of the 1930s.
The exhibition is part of the Picasso Celebration 1973-2023 program, which includes more than fifty exhibitions and events commemorating the 50th anniversary of Pablo Picasso's death at renowned cultural institutions in Europe and the United States.
