Casa de Velázquez in Madrid today presented the exhibition Diego Velázquez invites Pablo Picasso... and Carmen Calvo, which will remain open from October 27 to February 15, 2024.
Curated by Emmanuel Guigon, director of the Museu Picasso in Barcelona, the exhibition not only shows Velázquez's influence on Picasso, but also how Carmen Calvo, a prominent Valencian artist, was inspired by both artists to make a series of postcards entitled El tiempo que apasiona. In 2023, this series has been expanded on the occasion of the anthology dedicated to her by the Picasso Museum in Barcelona. Thus, his work, inspired by both Velázquez's and Picasso's Meninas, has become the core of this exhibition.
Diego Velázquez invites Pablo Picasso... and Carmen Calvo is divided into two complementary sections that explore the relationship between Velázquez, Picasso and Calvo. The first section, a documentary and didactic experience, is based on the book Diego Velázquez invites Pablo Picasso, published by the Casa de Velázquez in co-publication with the Museu Picasso in Barcelona.
Through selected texts, reproductions of works, archival photographs, letters and audiovisual material, visitors will discover the unique connection that was woven between Velázquez and Picasso, especially during the summer-autumn of 1957, which led to the creation of Las Meninas (Picasso, 1957).
The second section presents the collection of works by Carmen Calvo, inspired by the modified postcard series El tiempo que apasiona. For the exhibition, 110 new postcards have been added to the original series.
