Their friendship crystallized around their respective work on the constitutive elements of their literary and pictorial practice: analytical decomposition of the simple elements of daily life, of language and painting, serialism - all formal characteristics founding the pictorial and literary avant-gardes of the 20th century.
This exhibition offers a documented approach to the life of Gertrude Stein, just a stone’s throw from the Musée du Luxembourg, which she frequented assiduously, her friendship with Picasso and her links with the Parisian art scene. It is essentially centered around the heroic years of Les Demoiselles d’Avignon and Cubism with a large collection of works by Picasso and archives, many of which come from the collection of the Musée national Picasso - Paris. There will also be a place for the posterity of this dialogue with emblematic works by Warhol, Bruce Naumann or Roni Horn and Glenn Ligon...
Borrowing from his pre-concrete writing, set up in Tender Buttons. Objects, Food, Rooms (1914), the exhibition’s itinerary can be divided into major themes - places, objects, portraits, words - which is an opportunity to approach Gertrude Stein’s personal history, from the networks of the artistic avant-gardes to current reminiscences, by mixing artworks with sound extracts and other archival documents.
The exhibition is curated by Cécile Debray, President of the Musée national Picasso Paris, curator of the exhibition L’Aventure des Stein (2011) and Assia Quesnel, associate curator, art historian, doctoral student (thesis on Duchamp-Villon).
