Picasso and the Spanish classics examines the artist's relationship with one of the most influential novels in Spanish literature. The project focuses on a series of etchings that Picasso made at the end of his life (March-October 1968) on the only copy of the first edition of the Tragicomedy of Calisto and Melibea (Burgos, 1499) by Fernando de Rojas, better known as La Celestina. Beyond the specific theme, the exhibition will address questions about Pablo Picasso's relationship with literature, Spanish tradition, love and women. It will also raise specific questions about exile, the meaning of home and belonging. The exhibition will be accompanied by a full program of concerts, round tables and workshops.
