Claude Picasso, photographer, film director, visual artist, graphic designer and son of Pablo Picasso and Françoise Gilot, died on August 24, 2023 at the age of 76 in Switzerland.
After studying in France and Great Britain, he settled in New York from 1967 to 1974, where he attended the Actor's Studio and was assistant to photographer Richard Avedon. He worked as a photojournalist for magazines such as Time, Life, Vogue and Saturday Review, and was also involved in producing advertising films and directing plays.
After his father's death in 1973, he joined Maurice Rheims' team to catalog the more than 40,000 works of Pablo Picasso. From 1995 to 2023, he was administrator of the Picasso Estate and a member of the board of directors of the Musée national Picasso-Paris. He directed the Succesion Picasso until last July, when his sister, Paloma Ruiz Picasso, took over. In 2019 he spoke, in an interesting interview for the project "Rethinking Guernica" of the Reina Sofia Museum, about the process of transferring the work to Spain and the will of his father.
She was, since its constitution in October 2021, a member of the National Commission for the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the death of Pablo Picasso.
