Picasso's Landscapes: Out of Bounds debuted in winter at The Mint Museum in Charlotte and now travels to the Cincinnati Art Museum in Ohio, where it will remain on view from June 24 through November 11.

This exhibition showcases the landscape genre as a creative beacon in Picasso's life that inspired important developments in his work and the evolution of his painting. It also provides an appreciation of how the artist used the subject of landscapes to explore and question the work of the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists, such as Renoir, Cézanne and Van Gogh, among the most celebrated artists at the time of Picasso's arrival in Paris in 1901.

Organized by the American Federation of Arts with guest curator Laurence Madeline, the exhibition is a selection of more than forty paintings and sculptures, from some twenty-five public and private collections in the United States and Europe, that explores Picasso's creative evolution in the genre of landscape, with particular attention to the changing cultural context of the twentieth century.

Within Picasso's vast collection, landscapes have received less scholarly attention. However, throughout his life the artist used landscape to establish himself in new environments and move into new styles. From powerful nature in contrast to urban sprawl in Spain, to depictions of the city of Paris, occupied during World War II, and the beauty of the French Riviera, Picasso captured the essence of landscape in all its transformations.

The exhibition is part of the Picasso Celebration 1973-2023 program of more than fifty exhibitions and events, which will commemorate the 50th anniversary of Pablo Picasso's death throughout 2023 at renowned cultural institutions in Europe and the United States.

The United States pays tribute to Picasso with seven exhibitions as part of the Picasso Celebration 1973-2023 initiative: Cubism and the Trompe-l'oeil Tradition, on view at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York from October to January; Picasso's Landscapes: Out of Bounds, on view at The Mint Museum from February to May, and now at the Cincinnati Art Museum from June to October; The Young Picasso in Paris (Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, May-August).

Between July and September there will be another Picasso show at the Brooklyn Museum, It's Pablo-matic: Picasso according to Hannah Gadsby, while in the fall Picasso and La Celestina will open at the Hispanic Society of America, New York, and from September to January 2024 Picasso's Paintings for Hamilton Easter Field will be on view at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
